This charcoal sketch takes its main thematic inspiration from the life and work of English occultist and artist, Austin Osman Spare, who lived in the borough of Southwark in South London. Spare was a master at capturing the fleeting forms that interpenetrate the tangible realms of human consciousness from outside, through his use of automatic drawing and shamanic techniques such as "the death posture" (a type of auto-asphyxiation employed by him to short circuit what chaos magicians have called the "psychic sensor" that mediates between the conscious and subconscious mind).
